About Us

Bawdsey Primary is a thriving rural Church of England school with a family atmosphere. The beautiful school and grounds are located in an area of outstanding natural beauty and historical interest - close to the coast, the River Deben and the market town of Woodbridge.

Bawdsey has small class sizes, and as a result can give each child the attention they need to succeed.

Extra-curricular activities are strong, with before and after school clubs.

The Bawdsey Primary catchment includes the villages of Bawdsey, Alderton & Ramsholt, although we also have many children from the surrounding villages of Hollesley, Butley, Shottisham, Rendlesham, Sutton, Melton, and Woodbridge.

The high standards of behaviour and personal development noted at the time of the last inspection continue to be maintained. This is evident in: the calm and orderly atmosphere around the school; how well pupils work together in lessons; the way in which pupils from different year groups interact and socialise when eating and playing together at lunchtime; and the ease with which pupils joining the school from elsewhere settle in and form friendships with others. Pupils are interested to know about people from diverse backgrounds, and enjoy learning about different religions and beliefs. Pupils describe the school as being a ‘community’ where everyone is kind and compassionate. Pupils feel very safe and are happy to come to school.    OFSTED 2018

"The school's Christian ethos is evident within the school. It is shown in the caring and supportive relationships between pupils and staff. Pupils are valued as individuals and flourish in their personal development, appreciating the surrounding environment.

SIAMS Church School Inspection.

The development of the Christian vision has been strongly led by the headteacher and involved consultation with the diocese, governors and all members of the school community. Leaders explain that it is important not to be insular when living in a tiny community and that their vision ensures they are all outward looking.

Bawdsey is a voluntary controlled Church of England school, founded on Christian values.

Established in 1852, the school moved to its present site in 1900. Since then Bawdsey has been extended, with the innovative Millennium Wing providing three classrooms, and the Jubilee room has been converted into a fully equipped Teaching Kitchen.

The school is fortunate to have large grounds where the children can explore, relax and play safely. A shelter provides a covered area, while a sports field, adventure trail, climbing frames, wildlife pond and wooded area give the children access to many activities in a variety of environments.

Children are able to start full time in the September of the academic year in which they reach five. At eleven, they usually transfer to Farlingaye High School in Woodbridge.

Children are generally taught in small groups, with the average class size in the low twenties, so attention can readily be focused upon each child's growth & development.

Teachers work hard to develop a safe and caring atmosphere where each child quickly becomes a confident and happy member of the school community.

Whilst the school has a reputation for very high academic standards, it has a well-developed system of pupil profiling and Special Needs support to ensure that all children fulfil their potential.

Children have access to a very wide curriculum that is further enhanced by participating in local and national events as well as taking part in a wide range of extracurricular visits and activities.
